Let Them Be Themselves:
Why Every Child Deserves to Be Celebrated
As parents, we spend so much time helping our children learn, grow, make good choices, and find their place in the world.
We encourage them to try new things. We remind them to be kind. We hope they’ll find good friends, discover what they love, and grow into people who feel comfortable in their own skin.
And sometimes, without even realizing it, the world starts telling them who they should be.
Be quieter. Be louder. Fit in. Stand out. Look a certain way. Act a certain way.
What if we paused for a moment and celebrated who they already are?
The beauty of being different
Some children fill a room with their energy. Others quietly notice every little detail. Some love the spotlight, while others take their time warming up. Some are serious thinkers, some are natural comedians, and some are still figuring out what makes them light up.
There isn’t one right way to be a child.
I love photographing those little glimpses of personality ā the mischievous smile, the unexpected pose, the serious expression that turns into a laugh, or the moment a child forgets the camera is even there.
Those are the moments that remind us how wonderfully individual our children are.
More than a portrait
My Simply Me portraits grew from a simple idea: children deserve to be seen for who they are, not who they think they need to be.
This isn’t about being a model, having the perfect smile, or knowing how to pose. It’s about creating space for children to express themselves and celebrating the person in front of my camera.
And now, with Simply Me: Kids & Pets, there’s another layer to that story.
For so many families, animals are part of the family. They’re companions, comforters, playmates, and sometimes the ones who seem to understand us best. The bond between a child and a beloved pet can be full of trust, laughter, and affection.
Those relationships deserve to be celebrated, too.
A reminder for parents
You don’t need to compare your child to someone else’s. You don’t need to have every answer about who they’re becoming. And you don’t need to wait until they’ve reached a milestone to celebrate them.
Notice what makes them laugh. Listen to the stories they tell. Celebrate their curiosity, their kindness, their courage, and the little quirks that make them unmistakably themselves.
And when you look back at photographs years from now, I hope you see more than how they looked. I hope you remember who they were in this season of life.
Let them be wonderfully themselves
As a photographer and a mom, I know how quickly the seasons change. One day we’re helping with the smallest things, and before we know it, our children are finding their own way.
That’s why I believe photographs can be so meaningful. They give us a way to hold onto the personality, connection, and individuality that make each stage special.
